Overview

Java Edition has had a world border for years; Bedrock never got one. So one player walks 50,000 blocks in a straight line, and your world file balloons with chunks nobody will ever visit.

Bedrock World Border draws a 384-block-tall animated wall at the edge of the world, in the Overworld, the Nether and the End, each with its own size, centre and look. Players get a countdown above the hotbar as they get close, and you choose what happens at the edge: teleport them back inside (at a safe height, so miners stay underground and nobody lands on the Nether roof), push them back off the wall, or do it the Java way and let them through but damage them once they're past a safe zone. Protect blocks outside stops players breaking, placing or using anything beyond the border, and stops explosions inside it reaching blocks outside.

Borders can shrink or grow over any length of time: tell the Overworld to go from 64 chunks to 2 over twenty minutes and the wall closes in smoothly, turning red as it shrinks and green as it grows. The menu shows how fast each wall will move before you start, and a resize carries on after a restart. Pair it with the Damage action for a battle royale. The Nether border can follow the Overworld's, divided by 8, as in Java.

Custom areas are separate borders with their own settings, for PvP arenas, lobbies and minigames far from the main world. Players are always returned to the area they were last inside, and messages use the area's name.

Choose from 11 wall styles and 10 colours, previewed in the menu, with any opacity and an animated or still wall. Everything is set from /worldborder:menu, with an explanation under every setting and a Save button that applies only what you changed, and everything can be automated from command blocks and other add-ons with scriptevents. Crossing the border is a strict whitelist: operators are stopped too unless they're on it.

Version 4.1.0 brings shrinking and growing borders, the Damage action, the Nether following the Overworld, a new menu, style previews, still walls, area names in messages, smoother walls and safer teleports.

  • Separate borders for the Overworld, the Nether and the End
  • Teleport back, push back, or Java-style damage beyond a safe zone
  • Borders that shrink or grow over time, red while shrinking and green while growing
  • Resizes carry on after a restart
  • Nether border can follow the Overworld's, divided by 8
  • Custom areas: separate borders for arenas and minigames, named in every message
  • Protect blocks outside: no breaking, placing, buckets or explosions past the border
  • 11 wall styles and 10 colours, previewed in the menu, with opacity and animated or still
  • Warnings above the hotbar as players get close
  • Safe teleports: miners stay underground, nobody lands on the Nether roof
  • Strict bypass whitelist: operators aren't exempt unless listed
  • Full menu with an explanation under every setting
  • ScriptEvent API for command blocks, functions and other add-ons
  • No experimental toggles required

How to install

  1. Download the .mcaddon from CurseForge and open it with Minecraft to import both packs.
  2. Add the BedrockWorldBorder behavior pack to your world; its resource pack switches on with it.
  3. No experimental toggles are required.
  4. Enter the world and type /worldborder:menu (operators) to set up your borders.
  5. To cross the border yourself, add yourself to the Bypass whitelist in the menu.

Changelog

  1. v4.1.0 Latest
    New
    • Shrinking and growing borders: resize a border gradually over any length of time, as with Java's /worldborder set <size> <time>. The wall closes in smoothly, turns red while it shrinks and green while it grows, and the resize carries on after a restart (time the world is closed doesn't count). Start, stop or finish one from Resize over time in the menu, which shows how fast each wall will move before you start, or with /scriptevent worldborder:resize <target> <chunks> <time>. shrink and grow take an optional time too
    • Damage action, as in Java Edition: players can go past the border, but past a safe zone (5 blocks by default) they take damage twice a second, more the further out they are. Safe zone and damage rate are set per border. Players who respawn or join outside a border are moved back inside instead, so a spawn point outside can't cause a death loop
    • Nether follows the Overworld: an option that keeps the Nether border at the Overworld's centre and size divided by 8, as in Java, including during a resize. Switching it off leaves the Nether border where it was
    • New settings menus built with Minecraft's data-driven forms:
      • An explanation under every setting
      • Damage options appear only when Damage is chosen
      • Mistakes are shown on the form instead of closing it and losing what you typed
      • Press Save and only the settings you changed are applied
    • A preview of the chosen wall style in the chosen colour, under the Style and Colour dropdowns. It replaces the font icons that 4.0 put in front of each style name, which the new menus can't show
    • Animated option for each border: switch it off for a still wall. Also /scriptevent worldborder:animated <target> <on|off>
    • Messages for a custom area name the area ("Approaching the edge of PvP Arena", "Outside PvP Arena!") instead of calling it the world border
    • Centre on me and Teleport to centre buttons, and the main screen shows every border at a glance, including resizes under way
    • Whitelist players who aren't online by typing their gamertag
    • Prevent Interaction now also stops explosions inside the border from breaking blocks outside it, and stops buckets being emptied outside it
    Changed
    • The border wall fades smoothly from one refresh to the next, and its pattern scrolls continuously instead of stepping (ported from Chunk Visualizer 1.3.0)
    • The wall refreshes every second instead of every 3 seconds, so it appears as soon as you get close
    • Knockback pushes players straight back across the wall they crossed, and a player still outside after 3 pushes (stuck in a tunnel, say) is teleported back
    • The warning distance no longer has to be smaller than the border: on a small border, warnings start in the outer half
    • "All dimensions" applies only the settings you change, and no longer sets all three dimensions to the Overworld's size and centre
    • Custom areas are each stored separately, so a world with many areas can't hit the storage limit. Worlds from 4.0 are moved over automatically
    • The View Status page has been folded into the main menu (/scriptevent worldborder:status still prints everything)
    • Licence changed from MIT to GPL-3.0-or-later, the same as our other add-ons. Earlier versions stay under MIT
    • Requires Minecraft 1.26.50 or newer (Script API @minecraft/server 2.10.0 and @minecraft/server-ui 2.2.0)
    Fixed
    • Players teleported back in the Nether were put on the bedrock roof. Players are now kept at their own height when there is room, otherwise moved to the nearest place they can stand, so miners stay underground and fliers aren't dropped
    • Players teleported back underground could be put inside solid stone, then lifted to the surface a second later
    • The border wall blinked every time it refreshed, and its animation jumped back to the start
    • Blocks one block past the east and south edges counted as inside the border for Prevent Interaction
    • Blocks placed outside the border in creative mode were handed back as items
    • Opening the menu no longer damages you by 0 to close the chat screen
    Upgrading from 4.0.0
    • Everything carries over. New settings start at their defaults: Damage uses a 5-block safe zone at the Java Edition rate, and the Nether doesn't follow the Overworld until you switch it on

    Works with Minecraft Bedrock 1.26.50+

  2. v4.0.0

    Breaking Changes

    • Commands removed: All /worldborder:* commands except /worldborder:menu have been removed. Every setting is configured through the menu; automation uses the new ScriptEvent API. Command blocks using the old commands must be updated
    • Strict bypass whitelist: Operators and admins are no longer automatically allowed through the border. Only players on the bypass whitelist can cross it. The border_bypass tag is no longer honoured
    • New border style set: The numbered styles have been replaced with a named set of better-optimised patterns. Worlds upgrading revert to the Default style until a new one is chosen

    Added

    • Custom Areas: Create any number of separate bordered regions (e.g. a PvP arena far from the main world), each with its own full set of settings. Players are always returned to the region they were last inside, so leaving an arena puts you back in the arena
    • ScriptEvent API: Control every border setting from command blocks, functions and other addons with /scriptevent worldborder:<action>. Run /scriptevent worldborder:help for the full list
    • Bypass Whitelist menu: Add online players or remove whitelisted players via dropdowns
    • Status view: Per-dimension, per-area and whitelist status from the main menu
    • Border styles: Default, Square Lines, Tribal, Straight Lines, Square Cross, Glass Circle, Cross, Hearts, Hexagon, Glyphs and Square, each with a preview icon in the dropdown
    • Tooltips on every settings field
    • Colour names in the Border Colour dropdown are shown in their actual colour
    • Show Border Particles toggle exposed in the settings form

    Fixed

    • Wall corners: Border walls now stop exactly at the corners instead of overshooting into a cross shape, including for borders whose centre is not chunk-aligned
    • All nearby borders (main and areas) are rendered at once, not just the one you are inside

    Works with Minecraft Bedrock 1.21.130+

  3. v3.1.0

    Added

    • Customisable Border Colour: Choose from a selection of border colours per dimension via the admin UI
    • Customisable Border Opacity: Adjustable opacity slider (0-100%) for border particles per dimension

    Fixed

    • Dimension Switching Outside Border: Fixed issue where switching dimensions while outside the world border was not handled correctly
