Bedrock Dynamic Lights
Torches, lanterns and everything else that glows light up the world around them as you carry them, drop them, throw them or set them alight. In colour with Vibrant Visuals, with lights from other add-ons learned automatically, and without ever touching a block you placed.
Features
- Held lights: whatever is brighter of your two hands lights up the world around you, at the level it gives when placed (torch 14, soul torch 10, redstone torch 7, lantern 15, and every other vanilla light you can carry)
- Keeps up with you: the light goes where you're heading, so it stays with you when sprinting, riding a horse or minecart, or flying with an elytra
- Dropped items: light items on the ground glow where they land, and as they fly through the air
- Glowing mobs: blazes, magma cubes, glow squid, allays, vexes, wardens and end crystals light their surroundings
- Anything on fire: burning mobs, players and arrows
- Mobs holding lights: an armor stand holding a lantern is a lamp; zombies, skeletons and piglins that pick up a torch carry its light
- Fireballs and fireworks: ghast, blaze and dragon fireballs and fireworks light up their path
- Lit TNT and creepers: they pulse white, faster and brighter as the fuse runs down
- Flashes: explosions, lightning and bursting fireworks light up their surroundings for a moment
- Coloured light with Vibrant Visuals: soul light is blue, copper green, redstone red, torches and lanterns warm, amethyst purple
- Underwater: glowstone, sea lanterns, lanterns and other lights that work underwater keep glowing; torches go out, with a sizzle and a puff of steam. Or let everything glow underwater, as a server setting
- Other add-ons' lights, learned: place another add-on's glowing block somewhere dark and its light is measured; from then on it glows when held or dropped too. Nobody has to set anything up
- Off hand: sneak and use a light, aiming at the sky, to swap it into your off hand; what was there comes back to your hand, and the same light tops up the stack. Glowstone, sea lanterns, froglights and other glowing blocks are held properly in the off hand, not drawn off at the edge of the screen
- Never changes your world: only its own invisible light blocks, only in air or water, and never a vanilla light block or anything you placed
- Light by day costs nothing: outdoors in daylight no light blocks are placed at all; they come on by themselves at dusk
- Server control: admins switch each kind of light on or off, set the range and how many items and mobs glow at once, and check or correct the learned lights
- No experimental toggles
Requirements
- Minecraft Bedrock 1.26.50 or newer
Installation
- Download the
.mcaddonand open it: Minecraft imports both packs. - Create or edit a world, go to Behavior Packs and turn on Bedrock Dynamic Lights. Its resource pack switches on with it.
Use
Pick up a torch. /mygen:dynamiclights opens your settings: whether what you hold lights up, and the off hand shortcut. Admins (Game Directors and above) also get Server settings: each kind of light, coloured light, range and limits, and the learned lights.
Light blocks are part of the world, so everyone sees every light. That's why what glows is the server's choice rather than each player's.
For other add-ons
Your items and entities can glow without depending on this add-on.
Item tags (in the item's JSON):
"minecraft:tags": { "tags": ["dynamiclights:level_12", "dynamiclights:colour_soul", "dynamiclights:waterproof"] }
Colours: white, warm, glow, soul, copper, redstone, amethyst, sea, pink, verdant.
Script events, sent every time the world loads (nothing is saved):
/scriptevent dynamiclights:register_item {"id":"mymod:crystal","level":12,"colour":"amethyst","waterproof":true}
/scriptevent dynamiclights:register_entity {"id":"mymod:wisp","level":8,"colour":"sea"}
From a script: system.sendScriptEvent('dynamiclights:register_item', JSON.stringify({ id: 'mymod:crystal', level: 12 })).
Flashes, for spells and effects: /scriptevent dynamiclights:flash 15 20 soul flashes at whatever runs it, fading from level 15 over 20 ticks. Or give a place: {"x":0,"y":64,"z":0,"dimension":"minecraft:overworld","level":15,"ticks":20,"colour":"warm"}.
Alongside other add-ons
Don't run two dynamic light add-ons together: they fight over the same light blocks.
