Bedrock Chunk Visualizer

Bedrock Chunk Visualizer

See Minecraft's chunk borders while you build. Use any compass to open the
settings menu, switch the borders on, and they stay up until you switch them
off.

Installation

  1. Download the .mcaddon and open it. Minecraft imports both packs
  2. Create or edit a world, go to Behavior Packs and turn on BedrockChunkVisualizer. Its resource pack switches on with it
  3. Enter the world and use a compass

Needs Minecraft Bedrock 1.26.50 or newer. No experimental toggles.

Opening the menu

Use any compass. No renaming, no anvil, no commands. A vanilla compass has no
use action of its own, so nothing is lost. Compasses named "chunky" or
"stillchunky" from older versions work too.

Changes apply the moment you make them, so you can watch the borders change
behind the menu. Close it with Close or the X. Settings are saved for
each player and kept between sessions.

OptionWhat it does
Show chunk bordersThe borders themselves. Once on, they stay on: put the compass away and build
Animated bordersA smoothly scrolling grid that's easy to pick out at a distance, or a still one
N/E/S/W markersBig floating compass letters on each wall of your chunk, coloured by the colour scheme
Chunk labelsThe coordinates of the eight chunks around you, floating over each one, with slime chunks marked. Off by default
Info barA live readout above your hotbar (below)
ColoursClassic, Colour-blind friendly or Subtle (below)
Brightness25% to 100%. Turn it down for a quieter grid

Everything except Show chunk borders is greyed out while the borders are off.

Colour schemes

SchemeYour chunkAround itCompass letters
ClassicYellowRedBlue N, green E, orange S, pink W
Colour-blind friendlySky blueOrangeBlue N, yellow E, orange S, white W
SubtleWhiteGreyAll white

The colour-blind letters differ in brightness as well as colour, so they stay
distinct with red-green colour blindness.

Reading the borders

  • Your chunk (yellow in Classic): one grid square per block, so you can count blocks along the edge
  • The eight around it (red in Classic): one square per two blocks
  • Brighter vertical lines at the ends of each edge mark the chunk's corners

The markers and labels show through terrain, so they still work underground.
Everything you see is yours alone: other players don't see your borders, and
everyone has their own settings.

The info bar

Overworld · Sunflower Plains · Chunk -12, 34 · Slime chunk · Facing NW
  • Dimension: Overworld, Nether or The End
  • Biome: the biome you're standing in
  • Chunk: the coordinates of the chunk you're in
  • Slime chunk: shown only when you're in one. Slime chunks are only in the Overworld, and slimes spawn in them below Y 40
  • Facing: the direction you're looking, to 8 points of the compass

Turn the info bar off to leave the action bar free for other add-ons.

For pack editors

scripts/constants.js holds the settings worth changing:

  • TRIGGER_ITEM_TYPE: the item that opens the menu (minecraft:compass)
  • PALETTES: the colour schemes, as tints from 0 to 1
  • MARKER_SCALE, MARKER_HEIGHT: size and height of the N/E/S/W letters
  • PARTICLE_SPAWN_INTERVAL, PARTICLE_FADE: how often borders refresh and how long each refresh fades into the next

The script passes colour, lifetime, fade and scroll position to the particles as
Molang variables (variable.cv_r/g/b, cv_life, cv_fade, cv_phase). Keep
tints at or below 1: the game clips each particle at full brightness, and a
higher tint makes the borders pulse at every refresh. To make the borders
brighter, brighten textures/particle/inner.png and outer.png instead.
